ULCHIN
My name is Jessica and I volunteer at the Humane Society every Wednesday, and other days when I have a chance. I began volunteering here in January when my dog of eight years, Sasha, suddenly passed on. Not long after I came in, two rottweilers were brought in, Arrow and Ulchin. Arrow got adopted pretty quickly, but Ulchin had problems. Frostbite had taken a hold of Ulchin and had scarred her legs, tail, ears, and lips, making her a sight for sore eyes. Once she recovered, I noticed not many people would look at her because of the funny way that her lips grew back, and the fact that she looked pretty scruffy. So I therefore made her my pet project and tried to make her less scared. She has the most beautiful smile and a wonderful disposition.

Wednesday, I walked Ulchie as usual, but then something unforgettable happened come afternoon. Three young women came in and decided to adopt Ulchie! I was so happy for her! So, although this is not a happy ending story for me, per say, it is for Ulchie. I am writing this just to thank those young women for taking Ulchie and giving her a good home and some love, because that's all she ever asked for!

OZZY and OLIVER
We adopted two good lookin guys from the Peterborough S.P.C.A. August 2003. They have grown into two fine felines. They are doing great in our home and we want to thank the nice and hard working animal lovers at the Peterborough Humane society for the amazing compassion they have for the animals and us humans. Your dedication is appreciated. Especially to us out there who are willing to adopt and care for rescued animals.

Ozzy is a black long haired domestic and Oliver a orange short hair domestic. They want to thank you for finding us. They get fed the yummiest cat food. And get lots of pets and free range of sleeping areas. Both are happily neutered now. And buddies with our two dogs.

Please everyone..care for your pets. Have them spayed or neutered!!! And visit the Peterborough Humane Society for your support! Rescue a pet today. Pets are for forever.

Thanks Peterborough Humane Society. God bless you!!

CALI
When we first saw Cali, she was crouched and cowering in her kennel, staring at us with her striking blue eyes. When she let out a low growl as we knelt in front of her to get a better look, we decided to move on and see what other dogs were available for adoption. We had been looking for a dog for quite some time, as a companion for us and for our dog Jack, and hadn't found quite the right dog yet.

When we told the Humane Society staff members what we were looking for in a dog, we were surprised when they recommended the little 5-month-old, blue-eyed, Husky/Border Collie mix that had appeared to be so frightened of us earlier. As it turned out, the little dog had arrived at the shelter only an hour earlier, and she was disoriented and terrified by the sounds and smells of the other dogs in the shelter. The staff recommended that we take her for a walk outside, where she could feel more comfortable and hopefully show us a glimpse of her true personality.

What great advice that turned out to be! After taking her out for only fifteen minutes, we were convinced that Cali was the dog for us. She had a sweet, gentle disposition, she was affectionate, calm and responsive. She was happy to lean up against our legs and enjoy our company in the summer sun. After a year of searching we had finally found our Cali.

We're so happy to see the changes and developments that she has experienced in the past year and a half. She was quite introverted and shy when we first brought her home, but now she eagerly seeks out attention from unfamiliar people and dogs. Despite her youth and apparent previous lack of training and socialization, she excelled at obedience class and took home first place with the top score. She has grown into a integral part of our close-knit family. Cali and Jack are the best of friends and tireless playmates, always up for a wrestling match or game of chase. Cali's favourite things are belly-rubs, giving big sloppy kisses, going for walks and dancing with 'mom' and 'dad'. (When she hears music she actually stands on her back legs and places her paws in your hands as an invitation to dance!)

We can't thank the Humane Society staff enough for recommending the frightened little dog with the bright blue eyes. We couldn't imagine sharing our lives with a more gentle, fun and loving creature than our Cali.

QUAKER
This is our puppy Quaker!

Quaker is 8 months old and we adopted him only 2 days ago from the Peterborough Humane society.. he has been everything I have hoped for and then some. I have not yet been disappointed only impressed! He is a hound/sheperd mix and he has the best temperment ever: he's gentle, quiet, playful, loving and the list could go on!

I must admit, we were very aprehensive to adopt from the humane society because we didn't really know where the dogs have come from, but I believe that animals deserve second chances too.. We came to the humane society a few times and saw some amazing dogs.. but Quaker was the one we couldn't be without! In fact, he didn't even have a name when we adopted him! Quaker just seemed to suit him perfectly! Even though it's only been 2 days, he knows his name and comes to it almost always! I love h im very much and I just want to thank the humane society for doing such a great job!

Thanks and Cheers!

SANDY
We adopted a stray German Shepherd/Husky female approximately 5-6 years old from you on Sunday, June 29/03. We called her Sandy - no one knew the poor darlings name.

The dog is amazing! She is so loving and trained (no accidents in the house). She LOVES walks! She does NOT like storms if she is left alone (some doors scratched by her panicking). She loves kids, she doesn't mind our new cat family member. She is a little leery of men. We think she might have been abused by a man prior to coming to our family. You did not know anything about her when she was picked up except she had a green collar. So sad.

Just wanted to let you know one of your rescues has a great family that loves her VERY much. We hope we have many more years together.

I told my husband I wanted 2 dogs and 2 cats but I have to work on that yet! And we will come back to the Peterborough Humane Society.

Thank you - it was 'meant to be' for Sandy and our family to be together.

KOBE
After months of begging for a dog, my sister and I were finally told that if we found a dog on the Humane Society web page that was suitable for our home, we could go and look at it. So we looked on the internet every day, but with no luck. Some bit other people, some weren't good with younger kids, but the biggest problem was that they were too big. Then one day my mom said that we could just go look since we were going to be in that part of town anyway.

When we went to the Humane Society, we still did not find a suitable dog as most of them were either larger dogs, or they had other problems. I had always had my eye on Kobe since I had seen him on the internet so I asked my mom if we could just take him for a walk even though he was a little bit bigger then what we had in mind (a shepard/lab mix!). How surprised we were! From looking so sad in the kennel, he went to a gigantic ball of energy, bouncing around and jumping up and givin g hugs and licking our faces. The whole family just fell in love with him! It didn't take long for us to realize that he was the dog for us. You could even tell my dad, who was VERY reluctant to get a dog, liked him (although he'd never admit it.) My mom said that we couldn't get him that day because she had to work on the weekend and she didn't want us alone with him, so we had to wait until monday to pick him up.

On Saturday my uncle took us to go walk Kobe for a while, which made the waiting even worse! When Monday came around we went to Wal-Mart early in the morning to pick up some stuff for him so we could go pick him up as soon as the shelter opened! We went there and we were all so excited we just did it as fast as possible so we could get him home. But first we had to go show him to the rest of the family. We went and saw my Grandma and my Uncle (who has 1 1/2 year old twins) and when he was with the twins, his wild, excited nature just calmed down and he just sat there and looked at them, he didn't jump or try to play hes very gentle and friendly which is one of the reasons why we fell in love with him.

It took him a while to warm up to the house, and didn't go up the stairs until about the 2nd week, (he still won't go in the basement) But its now been a little over a month, and we love Kobe even more! He is just a GREAT dog! He does still jump up, but we're working hard to control that. Other then that he is a little angel! He won't jump on the table or counters to get food, he doesn't bite, and he also doesn't go on the furniture! He is also very smart, in the short amount of time, we have taught him to sit, stay, shake a paw, lay down, and heel. We couldn't have asked for anything better. He follows me around everywhere, he is like my shadow, if I go upstairs he goes, if I go to the kitchen he goes. Perhaps the cutest thing he has done, is if he wants to eat, but we are not in the kitchen, he will hold as much food in his mouth as possible (like a chipmunk) then he will come to where I am sitting and he'll drop the food and eat it.

We would like to thank the humane society, I have found my companion and I think that he makes our family more complete. We couldn't possibly love him anymore and we are VERY glad that we found him. The begging sure did pay off!

Thanks SO much!
