SOPHIE
After putting my last dog to sleep, I realized that I could not go without a dog to come home to. I searched on the website and saw the perfect little puppy. I was going to go with a friend to the humane society just to look at her, but instead my mom woke me up on a Saturday morning and told me she would take me. My brother, mom and I all went up and on the way my mom was discussing the type she would like. This made me so excited because she told me she couldnt get another dog but then realized how dull a home is without a dog. We got up there and were going to ask about another dog named Pete who was two years old, i think. We were on our way to ask and there she was, waiting in the puppy room. I never knew they had a puppy room so i went in there and she stuck her paws through and wanted to play. She cried and we asked the lady if we could take her out to walk her in the yard. My mom and brother liked her so we went with her! We have had her about two and a half weeks now and she is settling in so nicely. We have a ferret that she loves to play with and pull by the tail but she is very gentle! She likes to sleep with us and play fetch! We kind of have doubts about her breed but were going to stick with what we were told which was a german shepherd/lab mix. She reminds us as a doberman kind of. We thank you for taking care of her while she was at the humane society and we are letting you know that she is doing great!

SPARKLES
We’ve renamed Sparkles Kira (which means “dark lady” in Irish) and she doesn’t seem to mind a bit. She’s been with us almost a week now, but this photo was taken on the very first day and you can see how well she fit in right from the start. She’s really a lovely dog, playful and very affectionate but good-mannered and a champion fetch player (must be the lab in her)! Her coat has picked up a nice glossy shine already. She had her first obedience lesson today — we want to make sure she’s a dog that everyone else likes too! Every night when my son is reading in bed she lies at the foot of it (well, sprawls over the bottom half, more like), but when it’s time to go to her own bed she settles down without a fuss.

We are enjoying her soooo much — thanks for taking care of her while she was waiting for her new home. I can’t wait to take her to the cottage in the summer and see how she likes swimming.

FRITZ
About 4 years ago I really wanted a dog. I had one when I was younger but he ran away. My dad agreed as long as the dog we got was from the humane society, was a german shepard with good coloring, medium in size, and friendly. Thinking that we would never find a dog like that he took me to the humane society that day. And there was Fritz (he didn't have that name while there). He met all my dads specifications except being medium in size (he was actually king size) but my dad and I fell in love with his sad expression. He was just lying there very quietly while all the other dogs barked like crazy. That night my dad talked to my mom - she was not to thrilled with the idea but my dad called the humaine society. They told him that several others had been intrested in him but she would put us on the list. Two days later when he was eligible to be adopted we got a phone call saying that the other potential owners had backed down at the last minute and Fritz was ready and waiting for us if we wanted him. That night my dad picked him up after work and Fritz was waiting for me when I got home from school. Fritz has lived with us ever since and espically enjoys going for car rides. Wierdly even more so if we are going to the vet. I guess he likes the treat he gets at the end of his visit. Thanks so much for all you do - without you I may have never been able to get my beloved Fritz C. Dog.

ANGUS
Almost 8 months ago we adopted Holly from the Humane Society (see below for her happy ending...) and we were so lucky to find such a wonderful dog in such a little body. The end of the summer was drawing near, and with it, Holly's Daddy's birthday.

Matt wanted a dog more than anything, but we just couldn't find one to fit the bill. We looked and looked for weeks before his birthday, even travelling to the Humane Societies in Lindsay and Lakefield, but none of the dogs were small enough for us to bring home. After nearly giving up hope of finding a suitable dog, we decided to make one last check at the Peterborough Humane society during our lunch break on a Tuesday.

Less than an hour before we arrived, Angus was dropped off for adoption. Recently neutered and micro chipped, along with some skin allergies and digestive problems, Angus would be a handful. I was doubtful, but the moment Matt saw Angus kick up grass to cover his business in the yard he was smitten. I knew we would be bringing Angus home that afternoon after work.

We brought Angus home that very day, and he got along wonderfully with Holly. They just can't get enough of one another, and often have to be separated so they will stop playing long enough to eat their dinner. Angus has also won me over with much loving attention and gentle obedience. We are thrilled to have our young family grow to four.

Angus has also been able to meet all his doggie Aunts and Uncles at home in Brockville, and gets along famously with them as well. Thanks again to the Humane Society for all their help and understanding...and to whoever brought Angus in that Tuesday: I'm sorry you weren't able to take care of him but I promise you we are more than able and are happy to do it!

Love,
Angus, Holly, and their Mommy and Daddy
(Leslie and Matt)

LUCY and RILEY
I have always had good luck with finding the perfect pets from the Humane Society. When I first lost my cat Wisers, I was looking to see if he was at the humane society in Peterborough, and I saw Riley. Each time I came back to check for Wisers, Riley was there, purring away for me to pet him. When I thought about getting another cat, I was watching Chex TV, and the commerical for pets for adoption came on, and who do you think I saw on the Tv but Riley. It was fate, I called my roommate and asked what she thought about a orange haired friend to come and live with us. I went right in and adopted him. That was approx. 5 years ago. He was a bit of a wild cat back then, who loved to attack feet and scared many of my friends, but I loved him. Along the way I ended up with a friends cat too. So Riley calmed down and became the most loving cat in the world. When my husband and I were dating, Riley would hear him lock the car door, and he would be up in the window watching him come to the door, once inside the first door Riley would jump down and go to the inside door, when my husband walked through the door, Riley would not leave him alone until he was petted for 5 minutes.

Riley now waits to hear us move in the bedroom, then starts to scratch at the door and the carpet. He also talks to us until he receives his breakfast. He is our morning wake up call.

When my husband and I first moved into our first house, we said that when we got a fence we would get a dog. Well every place we went we were at their humane society. We visited the Barrie humane society weekly, but with no luck in finding the perfect dog. Then one weekend we were in Peterborough, and my friend and I had time to kill, so we went into the humane society. I saw many dogs I fell in love with, and brought my husband back in to see. He went right over to Lucy's c age and said "what about this one". I feel in love with her instantly. We went and asked why she was here, and were told that she had been adopted, and was brought back 3 months later as the owners at the time said she was not house broken. We thought that was a little problem, but one that we could handle. So we took her outside and she went right for the grass and went the bathroom. Now we were in town for the night and could not take her with us right away, so the next morning when the lady working unlocked the door, we were there to adopt Lucy. A few days later my friend was back in and adopted a dog that she fell in love with.

Lucy has never had an accident on the floor, unless it was our fault at not letting her out in time, and everyone who met her fell in love with her. My grandparents were willing to babysit when we had functions in Peterborough to attend.

Lucy loved the boat, always would sit passenger to my husband, head over the edge. She always has her head out the window of the car, and if the window was closed her nose always rested on my husbands shoulder.

Within the next year we were visiting the humane societys again, and found Sadie from the Barrie Humane Society. They both got along great, many great memories of the two of them together.

On my birthday this year, Lucy passed away. She is sadly missed, but we know we gave her a third chance at a great life. Her collar is hung on a picture frame, and is always talked about. Sadie misses her more then us.

My husband has already started looking in the humane society's for the next dog to add to our family, as what better way to honour Lucy's life then to save another dogs life.

LAYLA
I always wanted a dog, ever since I could speak but it was never an option growing up. I moved out of my parent's house and in with my boyfriend Bill and we started talking about adopting a dog from the humane society. However it never got past the stage of talking until for my 20th birthday Bill and his family decided to give me my dream of having a dog.

I fell in love on our first visit there with a stray yel low lab, but we had to wait 2 long days before we could walk her and possibly adopt her. The morning of the 13th Bill called and asked if we could come visit her and take her home. We picked up a shiny new collar and leash and other pet supplies and headed across town. She was very quiet, nervous and scared when we adopted her, but once we got her home we knew she was perfect for us.

We have only had Layla for 3 days but she is adujusting well, she is happy, friendly and has an amazing personality. I want to thank the staff at the Peterborough Humane Society for being so helpful, Layla is a dream come true. I encourage everyone to visit the Humane Society if they are considering getting an animal because the staff is fantastic and all of the animals there are perfect in their own way.

- Jessica, Bill and Layla

SELWYN
After my husband and I visited some friends on a sunny summer weekend, we started to think about getting a dog of our own after seeing them with their new addition. There was no doubt in our minds that we would adopt from the Humane Society, knowing how many animals are left without a home for so many reasons...

We visited the Humane Society and saw this poor terrified dog, who wouldn't even come near the gate in her pen. She was also the only dog that didn't jump or bark madly as we walked by, which in the end won me over, as I never wanted a dog that was loud or boisterous. After 4 visits and many long discussions, we got all of her things ready and headed for the shelter, hoping she would still be there. When we went back to get her, she was a terrified as ever and let us know she wasn't goin g of her own free will when we tried to introduce her to the backseat of the car. I sat with her on the way home and we gave her the time she needed to build up the courage to get out of the car. After a few hours outside, we won her over and she's been amazing ever since.

As I type this out, she is panting behind me as she's just been playing with her favourite toy in the backyard. She is full of energy and we're already in love with her playful and witty personality. We're so glad to have discovered the wonderful world of dogs and we can only hope that she's enjoying her new home as much as her new owners are enjoying her company!

Nathalie, Heath,
and of course, Selwyn the dog!

HAPPY and SPICE
In November of 2004, we lost our beloved cat of 18 years. Max was a wonderful, loving cat and needless to say, our entire family was devastated. In January of 2005, we adopted two cats from the Peterborough Humane Society, Happy and Spice. We wanted older cats, preferably neutered males. Happy was 5 years old and Spice was 8 months old. Happy is very independent and shy while in contrast, Spice is very social and spunky. They have added joy to our lives in countless ways. They are both a great comfort to all and can be quite humorous. Happy has a very loud distinctive meow, while Spice has a very quiet timid meow. They both love being outdoors, going on adventures in our back woods and enjoy sitting on the pool deck while we swim.

We love you Happy and Spice and are glad that you both have come into our lives!

Love,
Anita, Jim, Bianca and Clarissa Boyington

SADIE
In 2001, I lost my home and had to give my beautiful dog, Raven, a new home. He happily lives with a big family full of creatures now - I see him every so often - and he looks happier than ever.

In 2004, I had my three cats, Morris, Meegs & Ninja - whom I'd had since 2000, but still walked dogs on occasion for the fun of it. I was having a particularly rotten day in late October of last year and decided to wander my way with my mom to the Humane Society here in Peterborough. We visited kittens, cats, bunnies, guinea pigs and then finally made it to the dog kennels. There were so many poor sweet dogs looking to go outside and play! I picked out a Pitbull named "Lady" - who was an absolute doll and mom took out this dog - who was seperated from the others who would not stop bouncing everywhere - a tall, horribly skinny, coyote, border collie & sheppard mix - Sadie.

After the fun times outside we came back in and went home - for some reason mom kept bringing up Sadie. My mind started to wander and think about how cute she actually was. Hmmm..

Over the next couple of weeks I kept coming back and this time taking Sadie out. I started to bond with her - I asked how long she had been in the kennel - 3 months! They warned me she sadly had started to show signs of being "kennel crazy" - which is a tragic thing - most dogs are put down who go too far with that illness. At that moment I decided I had to find her a home! No matter what!

Sadly I couldn't find anybody and was so worried that Sadie would end up being put to sleep. I started to toss around the idea that I should take her. My roommates were not too impressed seeing as they already had a dog - who wasn't very social - and my three cats in a townhouse. I still pushed the idea. My mother spoke with my grandfather aka "Opa" (We're German) and my step-grandmother Jennifer about Sadie to see if they wanted to take her - but they did not think they could handle another dog after the death of their last one Inuk.

Time moves forward once again to mid-November. On a happy Sunday morning, my Opa was in town at my mom's and his wife visiting. My mom decided to call me and pick me up. We started to drive towards the Humane Society - and I kept asking why - I wanted to visit Opa. Well there standing in the driveway of the Humane Society were Opa and Jennifer! I was like "What?" We went inside and I knew. People were clapping and mom told me to go back and get her. That Opa and Jennifer had adopted her with the help of my mom for me!!

I don't think I've run that fast ever! I had a leash with me from mom and grabbed Sadie from her kennel - telling her she will never go back in there again! That she now had a home.

Everything was paid for and Opa had disappeared - I guess they had a previous engagement for dinner.

It took a while for Sadie and Virgo (the other dog here at home) to get along - but once they did - it was great. The two of them played non-stop. Virgo sadly moved out not too long afterwards which left Sadie with only the cats to play with (the cats do not appreciate being bounced at!).

She did have worms and was horribly underweight - but we took care of that. Now she eats top of the line foods in which I have researched, she digs like no tomorrow - our backyard looks like an excavation sight and she loves to lay in the tall plants under the living room window. She is very talkative, cuddly, sweet, attentive, protective and just all around an amazing dog.

In April of this year, two week before my birthday, my Opa passed away. He never got to see her progress into what she is today - which is my best friend. I thank him everyday for bringing my friend Sadie to me - I'll never forget that nor him. I still cry a lot but feel that Sadie is my bond to him - that he knew she was right for me. She snuggles in close to my body when I cry or mourn over my loss. She's so incredible.

Thank you to all the staff at the Humane Society for their help and care during our adoption and your continued work with all the other animals out there looking for someone to love them.

We will send a picture as soon as we can!

Sincerely,
Jess and Sadie Kuhlmorgen-Hille.

JAQUE
Hi - Catherine and Sid would just like to say how well we were treated at the Humane Society in Peterbourough and did in fact add a new member to our famaily . Pictures speak for themself.

I'd like to take this time to say thank you very much for all your kindness and we are having the time of our lives with our new arrival. Filled a gap in our lives and we'll take good care of our new girl. We named her Jaque [Jackie] and she loves her new home. All the best wishes to staff and care givers.

*************************

I'd just like to say Merry Christmas on behalf of Catherine and Sid, who have nothing more to say than keep up the good work and to how much we love Jaque and how she has brought nothing but joy to our home since she arrived.

Keep up the good work. As you know, all gods creatures, dog cat or otherwise have been given to us as a gift to help us cope with life and all its ups and downs with out you guys to look out for them and see they get good homes we would surely loose many more of his great gifts. Have a merry merry xmas from Jaque, Sid and Catherine (by the way, she loves her back yard)

KOBE
We began visiting the Humane Society towards the end of December 2004. We took a number of dogs out for walks, but couldn't seem to find the right one for our lifestyle, yard, or home. Both of us are dog lovers and found it difficult to leave without a dog each time we visited; those loving faces wreak havoc on the heart!

Finally, just after Christmas, we found the dog that was perfect for us. Unfortunately, because there were no adoptions taking place over Christmas, we had to wait until January to adopt. We visited the lovely collie/black lab mix faithfully to make sure he was still around on January 3rd when we could take him home.

Our dog, whom we have christened 'Kobe', is the best thing that could have happened to us. He goes everywhere we go, and where he can't go, we take pictures. He's sweet, well-behaved, loving and social with dogs and people. Although he was very thin and timid when we got him, Kobe has become a healthy weight and his outgoing demeanor has emerged. He's spoiled (but not overmuch) and pampered in exactly the manner all dogs should be!

Thank you to the Peterborough Humane Society for helping us connect with such a perfect dog!

- Jen & Dave

PHOEBE
I adopted Phoebe on April 22, 2005. She had been at the shelter since March 6. She and her two sibling-cats were at the Peterborough Humane Society because their owners could no longer care for them. She now has a nice new home. She is timid of her dog-sister, because the dog is 100 pounds while Phoebe is only 8! She is still timid but she has gotten much braver and the two pets now co-exist peacefully. I wanted Phoebe to be an indoor cat so she wouldn't be exposed to the dangers of cars and other animals, but she insisted on going outside. At first, she used a leash, but she hated it. Finally, I took a risk and let her out on her own. She now goes out on her own almost every night. She always arrives home in the morning for some attention, some food, and lots of sleep! When I arrive back in Peterborough in the fall for my third year at Trent University, I plan to continue volunteering at the PHS...walking dogs and petting cats. Without volunteers, the PHS would not be able to shelter and provide homes for so many sweet animals.

SAGE
Hello! This is Sage (aka Sagie Poo!!)

This wonderfully kitty was adopted from the humane society in Sept 2004...

She is such a wonderful kitty, she gets along well with our puppy, other kitty and ratties... She is such a sweetheart and loves to give lots of love too and the occasional fart (but we ignore that!)...

Thanks so much for giving us such a wonderful kitty!

- Cai and Ryan

LOLA
I started walking dogs at the Peterborough Humane Society at lunchtime and knew deep down that one day I end up taking one home. One day when I was leaving one of the ladies at the counter stopped me and remarked that I'd been coming in so often I should take a second look at Lola. She had just been dropped off and was frightened so it might be easy to miss her. (How much I feel I owe her!) I went back to Lola’s cage and fell in love.

Steve was a hesitating on getting a dog, but I convinced him to have a look. We went the first time we could both get there Saturday morning. When we went to cage area and saw Lola straight ahead - She went nuts! We took her for a little walk and then brought her home. That was 2 years ago and we’ve never looked back!

I can not express how happy we are - she is everything we could want for in a dog. It's amazing how close we’ve all become and how much joy she has brought to our home. It’s hard our house feeling complete without her. Thank you so much!

And I recommend anyone who wants to kill the occasional lunch time doing something worthwhile and healthy take one of the dogs at the Humane Society for a walk!

Many Thanks,
Steve and Marj

HOLLY
Matt and I had just moved in together here in Peterborough, and we were missing the company of our own pets at home in Brockville. At the beginning of December, we started talking about how nice it would be to have a dog around the house for Christmastime. On December 13th, we went to the Humane Society and looked at all the wonderful dogs there.

One little dog, curled up at the back of her kennel, caught our eye. She was a stray, and had only been at the shelter for 5 days! She was a little underweight, and very shy. She is a little Beagle/Jack Russell cross, and we fell in love with her on the spot! We think she is about 1 year old, but we don't know for sure, as she is a stray. Since she had only been there 5 days, we had to wait 2 more before we could bring her home, just in case her first family came to take her home. We put our names down for her and waited.

Two days later, I could hardly wait for the shelter to open up for the day. Luckily, our little dog was still there and I brought her home on December 15 to meet her new Daddy and Mommy.

We named her Holly, for the Christmas season, and she just couldn't make us any happier. She has really made the 3 of us a little family, and we spoil her rotten. She gets walks whenever she wants, and gets to sleep under the covers on the bed at night. She is truly a part of the family, and gets along famously with her new parents and all her doggie-relatives back home in Brockville. Holly loves to play and run and jump, and her absolute favorite toys are socks. She also loves to lay on her back to have her belly rubbed. We love her more than anything.

As soon as we get a bigger house we'll be adopting a play mate for Holly! Thanks to everyone at the Humane Society who were so helpful and understanding!

Love,
Holly & Her Mommy & Daddy
(Leslie & Matt)

ALI
I adopted Ali (also known to the family as Aligator or Beans) on January 15th. She is a 5 and a half year old gorgeous female. Although we had a very rocky start (she refused to come out of the closet for the first 3 weeks), things are improving every day. She and my other cat Banshee adore each other, and she's starting to realize that playing with the dog is fun too.

My experience at the Peterborough Humane Society was excellent and I wouldn't trade Beans in for the world. I just wanted to thank everyone at the humane society for giving me the opportunity to love such a sweet cat that has spent too many years being neglected. Rest assured that she has found herself a great home and that she is surrounded by an abundance of love each day!

Thanks,
Tina and Beans!

ROY
You thought my name was Moe, but it's really Roy. On Super Bowl 2005 Sunday, I went to Burlington to live in my forever home. I now have a Daddy and a Mommy, and a sister, Maxie - she's a dog, but let's not get into personalities. I don't know why, but a few hours after I moved in, Mommy and Daddy had a big party for me. I was VERY impressed to say the least. (Personally, I think Maxie thought they were there for her !) I very quickly made myself at home and without a worry in the world, welcomed all my guests. Apparently they didn't know the party was for me since they didn't bring me any presents, but, what the heck, they all sounded excited about my presence, although I must admit, I've never been cheered before like I was today. (Well, what can I expect, they are only human).

Mommy has a p.s. - Thank you so much for finding Roy. He certainly has a real thing for the computer. As I'm typing this, he's trying to chase the cursor. I cannot believe he hasn't been hiding on us, let alone "his" company. Also, thank you for taking such good care of him for us.

Meow

Here is Roy, now known also known as LeRoy. Wow, what a year he has had since last Super Bowl. He has travelled a few times to Cavan from Burlington to visit his dog and cat cousins. He just loves to help around the house. As you can see, he is on top of the ladder ensuring it is in the same place my husband left it when he got off. He has helped me shorten curtains by sleeping on them so they don't fall off the table as I'm sewing. He loves to go out in the backyard but isn't all that wild about his harness. He does know that when the harness goes on he's allowed outside with us. His newest talent is how long can you unravel a roll of toilet paper before being caught, or getting bored. This morning, it was until someone got out of bed to stop him. Every morning when I go to work, he and Maxie , our Australian Shepherd - by the way, LeRoy is Maxie's cat, they both know to go to their beds and I give them a little treat to hold them over till I get home at lunch time. He loves to chase Maxie and pretend that he is the Lone Ranger and Maxie is Trigger and tries to jump on her back like they used to in the old westerns. So far, Maxie has managed to just outrun LeRoy. Other than the fact he tends to have a bit of a temper, we wouldn't give him up for anything.

JADE
We only just adopted this angelic little being Jan 30, 2005. And already she has us wrapped around her tiny little paw. When you found her she was very dirty and needed some grooming. We have cleaned and dressed her up like a little princess. She was a stray when you found this little angel. And she came with no name. We have named her Jade. She needs special attention. But we do not mind. Even though she only has 8 teeth, she is still beautiful. We wanted to thank the Peterborough SPCA for the kind work they do. And to thank you for choosing me be her new mommy. Jade thanks you too. You can tell she feels so much better since she has been groomed and cared for since she has arrived in her new osasis with her new family and 2 Shih Tzu buddies!!!

MOLLY
We adopted "Molly" on June 15, 2004 from the Peterborough Humane Society. That was a day that we all will never forget. She has brought so much happiness and laughter into our home. She has just taken over as if she owns the place. She is definately "A Keeper"!!

When you enter our home she is there to greet you, when you leave our home she is there to say good bye. She has her own favourite chair and nobody sits in it except her... She has sooo many toys around the house you always know she is having fun. We brought her home when she was 8 weeks old and so tiny she was. She had a little stuffed animal friend that was the same size as her. She would snuggle with her stuffed toy and drag it around with her wherever she went.

Molly is now 9 months old and we are loving her even more. She had a wonderful Christmas trying to destroy our tree and Santa brought her lots of toys.

So, as a very happy family we all would like to thank the Peterborough Humane Society and all their "Wonderful Staff" for giving us the moment of becoming the owners of our Lovable Little Molly!

Thank you everyone!!

- Len, Kate, Adam, Kyle and Matthew Guerin.

NIKITA and NILES
On September 2, 2003, we adopted our first dog from the Peterborough Humane Society. Her name is Nikita and she is a Chow/Akita mix. She is now 2 years old and has been a wonderful addition to our family. We are University students and are so happy to be able to give her a good home. She is a very social dog and always wants to play with other animals.

On June 10, 2004, we adopted our second dog. His name is Niles and he is 1 year and 6 months and is a very busy and adorable beagle. The dogs get along so well. They have added so much joy to our lives. They both adjusted to our home perfectly.

We would like to thank the Peterborough Humane Society for two wonderful experiences and their kindness towards us and our dogs.

- Lisa, Greg, Nikita and Niles

RADAR
Hello there!
I adopted my cat Radar from you about 7 years ago now, as a playmate for my first cat who was lonely when I was at work.

I went into see about choosing a cat, and had fallen head over heals for a long-haired white kitten, when I felt a paw hitting me from the cage next to it. There sat a rather dull looking grey and black stiped short-haired tom cat, who I immediately decided to take home. He had been at the shelter for nearly 3 weeks (the note said he was 6 months old, and had been given up becuase he chased the previous owners birds)....well many years and moves later, I must confess that the previous owner missed out on a darn great cat.

Radar (I kept the name given to him by you folks), is an over-protective snuggly cat (often referred to as the cat-dog becuase of his behaviour), who brings me countless hours of joy and companionship. He gets along wonderfully with my other car (a rather prissy long-hair), and I could not picture my life without the two of them.

The wonderful thing about a cat like this, is that he asks little and gives everything in return, the same goes for shelters like the humane society. Anyone considering a pet should think of how wonderful something so small can be.

Thanks again,
Samantha
