GOOMBAH

To the hardworking staff at the Peterborough Humane Society,

Thank you for the work that you do helping to find animals homes. We adopted our goldendoodle (golden retriever x mini-poodle) from the Peterborough SPCA in 2005. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, and has become great friends of our two cats. Goombah was 6 months old when we adopted her, and went by the name Lucy. She was so goofy and fun, and needed a new name to go along with her personality. There was a definate adjustment period for the first few months, but after a while Goombah stopped taking apart our blankets and digging up the yard.

She is an energetic dog that is eager to please and quite smart. She is quick to learn new tricks, a lover of water and sticks and nuzzling me in the morning when I wake up. She loves her home and maintains a constant guard against squirrels.

Keep up the good work!

ANGEL

We adopted Angel our GSD/Lab mix on Easter weekend of 2001 at the age of five months old. We were all heart broken at the loss of our Cocker Spaniel cross, but Angel just filled our hearts with joy. I don't know how I ever went on without her. She is just a sweetie, and her big puppy dog eyes just make my heart melt! She is a pleasure to have around the house, and always has a friendly expression on her face, followed by a nice tail wag. I know the story of how she was given in, but I don't know how anyone could ever part with this wonderful girl! Through the years that I've had her our bond has grown to the point that I can never go anywhere without her puppy dog eyes popping into my head! She loves her brother, my one year old Border Collie, and they are just best buds, I've lost count of how many things they've knocked over while running around, but I love them no matter the case. I thank you for my wonderful girl.

Hi, I'm Lois, I adopted this beautiful ragdoll/cross from the shelter. She was very nervous and kind of cross at first! I got her for my sons 1st birthday because his Dads dad got him a cat on his 1st birthday so kind of a tradition thing....anyways she stayed under the couch or bed for the first few days but now she's become so friendly and playful...she always sleeps right at my feet and rushes to the door when I get home it's so cute also we could tell she wanted to go outside but she has accepted that its safer inside now.

So thank you very much.

OSCAR AND FELIX

To the great staff at Paulmac's and the Peterborough Humane Society,

When looking for my new cats I decided to see who was up for adoption at the Paulmac's store on Lansdowne Street. I was sure I wanted a pair this time so that they would be company for one another while I was at work.

'Zippy' nearly crawled through the mesh in the cage when I came over, so I opened it up to take a better look. He came out, wrapped his arms around my neck and tucked his head under my chin. Sold. 'Fisher' was another fellow who'd spent four of his young eight months at the store waiting to be adopted. The staff at Paulmac's assured me the two got along during their exericise time, so I took the pair. The name 'Zippy' was not working for me (or him), so he was rechristened 'Oscar'. How could I not rechristen the young fellow 'Felix'?

The two get along famously and I get lots of laughter over their wrestling matches and the havoc they wreak throughout the house. They each enjoy having a brother to play with, and Oscar has decided Felix is his responsibilty to groom and care for. They're completely spoiled with beds and toys and attention. I also have them mostly convinced that 5am is just too early to get up!

Thanks very much to the Humane Society for the work you do and to the staff at Paulmac's who help get more of the kitties out there to be seen and adopted out.

Pam

BEAN

We found our cat Bean at the Humane Society back in 2006. She was very stand offish when we first adopted her and scared of her new surroundings. Now she is healthy and happy and runs our household! She brings a smile to our faces every single day and we could not be happier that we adopted her! She is our baby!

MILO

I was a student living in Peterborough in 2006 and frequently visited the Humane Society looking for brother for our cat Abby. The day I walked in and saw Milo playing about in the kitten room I knew I had to take him home. He has been an amazing addition to our family. He gets along with everyone that walks into our home and some say "your cat is like a dog". Just wanted to thank you guys for taking in so many animals each year including our little Milo. We will love him for years to come.

MICKEY
Hi Everyone:

Just wanted to give you an update on Friskey - the cat we adopted in your break out sale. He has been re-named to "Mickey" due to the black shapes on his side - they actually look like a Mickey head!

He settled in well right from the moment he came through the door. Our one dog is in love with him and they play together for hours. (Actually, we think Mickey sometimes feels he is a dog.) He has lots of toys and lots of company and has given us a lot of laughs.

Hope you enjoy the attached pix.

BUBBLES
Staff of Peterborough Humane Society,

Just wanted to let you know how a Shih Tzu dog we adopted is doing. We picked her up Oct 2, 2007 from you and originally you had called her Holly or Molly. We renamed her Bubbles. She was a white-blonde Shih Tzu with very long matted hair when we got her. At first you said she was not up for adoption as she growled. This did not bother us as we were used to that breed doing this. I think this was the result of being out on the street for a bit as she is slowly getting over growling. Most of it now is just a play grumble. She was at the shelter for about a month and picked up as a stray. Well we got her home had her bathed and taken to the groomers who had to clip her right down.

We found out from the vets that she had been "fixed" and was about 3-4 years old. We also were blessed to find out she was house broken and knew a few basic commands. She has settled in very well. And I am pleased to say we could not have had a better dog. She is remarkably well behaved. At one time we even took her into a hospital with us to visit a relative and she was very quiet and extremely good at this. She loves people and kids and is very much a lap dog. She is very happy and content and loves her new country home. Bubbles loves to tease and bark at our cat in hopes the cat will play with her but of course the cat will have nothing to do with her.

I have enclosed a picture of her.

I do thank you so much, she has filled a void in our life.

SADIE
Hello to the great staff at the Peterbrough Humane Society!

Just wanted to drop a line and let you know how well Sadie is doing! My fiance and I adopted Sadie almost two months ago. Sadie is a 7 year old Border Collie/Beagle cross and was in the shelter for over a month after being surrendered by an eldery woman who could no longer take care of her. Sadie was an older dog, overweight and had hypothyroidism that had gone untreated for quite some time so her chances of bein g adopted were pretty slim. We had our doubts at first but after getting to see the very sweet, affectionate and happy disposition of this amazing dog we knew she would fit very well into our family.

We are happy to report that Sadie is doing amazingly well! She is back on her proper medication, loves to play and dance and go for walks and has already lost 10 pounds! (According to the vet we have 12 more to go!) There is a health nut dog inside Sadie as she loves chasing balls (and squirrels), playing tugging games and snacking on her favourite treat...CARROTS! She is loved by the people in our neighbourhood (especially the kids) who all know her name and has been a wonderful addition to our family. In fact, we're not sure how we managed without her! We've never known such a friendly and well dispositioned dog and we have the Peterborough Humane Society to thank.

If you are thin king of adopting a dog, please consider taking one of the older ones. The love you get back far outweighs any other concern. We feel truly blessed to have her!

P.S. I have attached a recent photo of Sadie playing with her puppy friend Nina (she looks like her mini me).

TIGGER
To the wonderful staff at the Peterborough Humane Society,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you guys so very much for all of your hard work that you do each and every day. I adopted Tigger from the Humane Society in 2006 and this thank you is long overdue. Tigger is my little "watch dog"; I am a Fleming College student and I have to leave early in the mornings, so when I do Tigger will follow me down stairs, I say good by to him and then I close the door. When I come back in the afternoon he is still there waiting for me on the hallway table laying down sleeping. Tigger is my precious little angel. Right now Tigger is sleeping right beside me on the floor near the computer, I can never imagine my life without him. Again, thank you so very much and when I am going to look for another pet I will definitely come to the PHS.

Love from,
Tigger and Beverly

P.S. Tigger says that he hopes that you will enjoy the cute picture of him. MEOW, MEOW.

PHEOBE
Once again, my life has been enhanced thanks our latest family member: Phoebe, a gorgeous black shepherd, who we adopted just days ago. She LOVES Juno (aka, Junior), whom we also adopted from the Peterborough Humane Society, last November. The moment they met each other, they started playing and kissing each other. So cute! She is such a beautiful girl, who just loves going for walks and doesn't take off when I let her run through the woods off-leash. She loves the pond, w here she dives for sunken treasures- head first, and splashes like a spaz.

I found out the first night we had her home, that she isn't housetrained, but she's catching on really fast and is a glutton for treats and praise. I have no doubt that she'll be totally housebroken within a month. She now circles the doorway to tell us she needs to go outside, and does her business like a proud princess. Her 'challenge' is getting used to my cats, but again, with a lot of gentle encouragement, she's learning not to bark at them and chase them. That, too, I think will take a month or so, but I believe in her! She's a good girl, who loves to please and is extremely obedient once she understands what's expected of her.

I first met Mickey last Monday afternoon when I paid a visit to the PHS. There she was, so eager to lick my whole face, and as happy as can be, when I took her outside for awhile. I wanted to take her home right then, but knew she'd be a challenge and wanted to make sure I was confident that I could be a good 'mom' to her, and give her a permanent, happy home. I couldn't get her out of my mind all night. The next day, we went back to see her and it was a done deal. There's no way I could leave her there, regardless that I knew she was a work in progress, so I adopted her and took her home.

Now she's sound asleep right beside me, very content and happy. I'll never part with her. She's already my little shadow and I love her so much!

Thanks, once again, for the amazing work you do. I've had great luck with the PHS and if ever I'm in a position to adopt another dog, it will be from you.

Sincerely,
Nikki F.

P.S. She LOVES the hose!

LOU
Hello!

My name is Adam , and I recently got my dog from the Humane Society. His name is Lou and he is a German Sheppard/Catahoula Hound cross. I absolutely fell in love with him the first time I saw him; it breaks my heart to see such a smart dog, tossed like trash. He is fully trained and wakes me up in the morning when he needs to go to the washroom. He never lets me out of his sight and is always happy to see me.

If you're thinking about getting an animal, check the Peterborough SPCA, the staff is friendly, and your saving a life or 2 in the process.

Thanks SPCA for giving me such a beautiful dog. I'm glad to give him a second chance in a good home.

- Adam H.

MOSES, TUXEDO MASK & EMMA
I am a Trent University student who frequents the SPCA often. So far, my friends and I have adopted three animals: Moses, Tuxedo Mask, both cats, and Emma the bunny. Tuxedo has taken over his home in Toronto with his owner Allie and loves to eat and climb up curtains. He is very happy to have a lovely home and his new kitty friend Mecha and him get along fabulously.

Moses still lives in Peterborough, and he loves to run around outside but comes in every night and sleeps on my pillow with me. My friend Sam and I share him but she isn't around right now and he misses her a lot. He gets treats all the time and loves to chase things on the tv, especially hockey pucks and mario in video games.

Emma the bunny (we call her bun bun) lived in Peterborough for a while. She got really lonely though, and so her owner Kat found her a nice outside home with other bunnies and she is as happy as she could be.

The Humane Society is the best place to find pets, as they are always in need of extra love and return it full circle. Even if you don't want your own pet, going and giving the animals some love is the best thing you can do. All the animals there need love, and there is probably one just for you!

JUNO (a.k.a. Junior)
Dear Staff,

I can't express enough how much we adore the little dog we adopted in November, '06. He's the sweetest, cutest, funniest and smartest dog we've ever had, besides his big brother, Caper, who helped us pick him out.

I wasn't looking for a small dog, which is why I nearly didn't even see the scruffy little Yorkie mix, who was in a separate room from the big dogs, but my husband called me into the room and said, "What about him?"

I took one look at Junior and fell irreversibly in love with him. He was a shaggy little grey and brown mop, sitting calmly in his pen, looking up at me through the tufts of fur covering his big brown eyes.

We'd looked at a couple of other dogs by then, and though I hope they also got good homes, I'm kinda glad they weren't compatible with Caper, our other dog. We brought Caper with us that day to make sure he and the new dog would get along. They did! I couldn't believe it, since Caper's always been territorial and wouldn't hear of another dog moving into his domain. To our surprise, Junior and Caper hit it off right away. As well, Junior and I bonded when I took him outside for a walk in the shelter yard, to see what he was like on a leash. He was awesome.

He was great in the car on the way home. He sat on my lap and licked my hand the whole way. When we got home, he went nuts, sniffing everything, jumping all over the place, so happy. We have 10 cats, whom he terrorized that first day, but again to my surprise, within the week, the cats accepted Juno as though he'd always been here and now, he gets along amazingly with every last one of them. He loves other dogs, he loves cats, he adores kids, and just loves everybody. I doubt there's a vicious or mean bone his whole little body.

It's been 7 months since we brought Junior home. We renamed him JUNO, because he's just that special to us. Our three kids absolutely adore him. He adores them just as much. He loves the car, loves his daily walks through the woods, and loves his new family and isn't afraid to show it. He sleeps on my bed every night, once the kids are asleep and he's sure they're okay. He stays with them- goes fr om room to room, until everyone's snoring, then he hops onto our bed and passes out. He's totally housebroken, doesn't chew up our things, and he's as smart as can be. Best of all, he doesn't need to be stuck on a leash outside. He stays in the yard. We walked him around the property three times to show him his boundaries, and that was it! He's SO smart! We taught him to sit, shake a paw, roll over, speak, and all kinds of other things. We only ever have to show him something twice before he gets it.

I just love him to pieces and I'm so glad there were no 'big dogs' that were compatible with Caper and us that day. Thank-you so much for the work you do. Every day I'm grateful we found Juno, who we nicknamed June-Bug, sitting in that back room. He's the perfect dog for us. He loves his baths, and being brushed, and he gives little Juno kisses to show his love for us .

Sincerely,
Nikki F.

SPROCKET
My life was changed when I walked into the Humane Society on a hot summer day in 2001. I was immediately drawn to the sad looking face of a Lhasa Apso/Jack Russell Terrier mix. He had his head sticking out of the kennel and was whimpering.

I asked at the front desk what the story was on the poor fellow and I was told he was a stray that nobody came for. I was sickened by the fact that no one came looking for him, so I put my name on him. Not expecting to get him because I was name #7. Two days had passed and I wondered the fate of the poor dog, then the phone rang, it was the Humane Society calling and telling me to come and adopt the dog. I was sooooo happy. The dog once known as a stray is now named Sprocket and is doing well at 8 years of age. Although he had surgery to remove a tumour, he's as spunky as a puppy and doing well.

LUCAS
I grew up with smaller dogs my whole life and spent two years of college without a pet. In August of 2005 I went out with my room mates for a trip around my new home in Peterborough. We came across the shelter and decided to go in. After each of use had walked four dogs we were ready to call it a day and try again. Just then my room mate Adam came out with Lucas. The other dogs were more interested in running around the yard; Lucas lied down on the grass with us. I knew at this moment he was mine.

I read that Lucas wasn’t well behaved with other dogs and he’s been returned a few times and promised his a permanent home. This proved harder than first though being a student, but he has truly enriched my life.

Lucas has received millions of nicknames, hugs, walks and cuddles. He loves the car, the park, and visiting with other dogs! I would give my last dollar, for this dog to be happy. I even went though the difficult process of finding student housing with a yard.

Lucas turns three next month and is still a puppy; I’m glad. I still have many happy years with Lucas in my life and I’m sure he feels the same about me.

MOLLIE (a.k.a. Cocoa)
To the hard working people at the Peterborough Humane Society:

I’ve been meaning to send this happy ending’s tale to you for quite a while now; it’s way overdue.

I found her in your shelter on October 28, 2006. You called her Cocoa. She was listed as a 1 year old Hound/Chocolate Lab and she was in heat at the time. I fell completely in love and had to adopt her and make her part of my life. I changed her name as I’d had some sad memories with the name (Cocoa) and her name was changed to Mollie on the way out the door. I just thought it suited her and it really does. She knows and responds to it well now.

It’s been just over four months now and she’s definitely fit into our lives. She and I have formed such a strong bond and I couldn’t imagine my life without her.

Mollie and I have gone through basic obedience training with Susan Marshall at All Creatures Great and Small and she’s responded very well with it. She really is a very intelligent girl; intelligent with a stubborn streak. She’s also a big suck who likes to think she’s a lap dog. It also seems that she most likely has more Pointer in her than lab. I remember Sarah mentioning that she thought Mollie had Pointer in her. She shows a lot of pointer qualities and her groomer said she has the feet of an English Pointer.

Mollie loves her Kong filled with peanut butter and frozen, her treat ball (an orange ball that I put treats inside), her Evo dog food and anything she can chew (we buy a lot of chew things).

I can only imagine from your stand point how it must be somewhat scary when a dog leaves the shelter in heat so I would also like to add that we were extremely careful with keeping her away from other dogs until she was safe. The vet wanted to wait for the spaying until her blood vessels were back to normal so, taking that into consideration, we finally had Mollie spayed on February 12th and we have no little ‘Mollies’ running around.

In closing, I would just like to say keep up the good work – YOU ALL ROCK!!!

- Deb F.

LOLA
My name is Lewis. I own a cat that I adopted from the humane society. Her name is Lola. I love her. I have even made a documentary about her called "Lola, The Ferocious Pussycat". Lola and I spend every Monday night watching Dr. Who on TV. When Miss Lola runs around the house we call it the "Lola 500". Every night when I go to bed, after I get tucked in and all snuggled, Lola jumps on top of my blankets to play her own special game called "Catch The Toes".
