SHADOW
In December 2007 we adopted "Shadow" from the Peterborough Humane Society and we gladly sent along our "happy ending" to let everyone know how he was doing. The picture you posted was of Shadow and his 2 brothers, Magnum and Trouble, the "tree amigos" (lol).

Well a little over one year has passed since we adopted Shadow, who is nearly 2, a dog that was deemed to be problematic by previous owners, who was said to be agressive towards small animals and children, etc. and we couldn't be happier. He is such a joyous addition to our family. very loving, obedient and playful.

On that Thanksgiving weekend of 2008, our family was at the Bobcaygeon garbage dump and rescued an eight week old kitten that was dumped and left to die. She is a beautiful little thing that needed a home and some love and we opened ours to her. We named her Boo-Boo as it was close to Halloween and she is mostly black.

Shadow has taken a personal interest in Boo-Boo and takes the time to play with her, groom her and even sleep with her. Seeing them together often makes us laugh.

We have attached a few pictures of the two of them togther that we wanted to share.

Well, it just goes to show you that people who are not familiar with how to handle animals properly can be so very wrong. A little love, some attention and guidance is all any of them need.

Our happy ending is yet another addition to our home, a baby-sister for Shadow, Magnum and Trouble and lots of love and laughter to share.

DUKE
We adopted Duke, our black lab mix, in January of 2008. He was my birthday present from my fiance. We had just moved out on our own and were looking at getting a puppy! So I thought we should go to the shelter to "just have a look"! So we took a look around at all the adorable dogs, and of course, I wanted to adopt all of them!! But Duke cought our eye because he was so excited to see us! We took him outside for a walk and that sealed the deal! He started jumping around and playing with me, and he listened really well! We immediately fell in love with him! Our boy is so loved by our entire family! You can't help it! He just has a way of making you! He's the friendliest, most playful and happy go lucky dog I know! My parents also have a female lab, she's an older girl but the two of them love each other so much! She trys to keep up to him when there playing but he tires her out pretty quick lol. His favourite things to do are chew bones, chase our 2 cats, and run and run, and run! Oh! and snuggle in bed with us! of course! lol. Duke was 3 when we adopted him, and is now just over 4, I can't imagine my life without him, and feel like he's always been there! Thanks so much to everyone at the shelter who helps adopt out these amazing pets!, Volunteers! and those who Donate! We wouldn't have such an amazing boy in our life if it wasn't for all of you! And to all those considering adopting from the shelter, I can whole heartedly say you won't regret it!!

Thanks again!

JACK
Hi All

I would like to take this time to write about a dog that we (my family) adopted back in August 2001. His name is Jack and he is a beagle/basset hound. My husband & I and our children were staying at our trailor in Keene. We had friends of ours over and my friend was looking for a dog. So we decided to stop in the Peterborough Humane Society to see what they had. My friend didnt really find anything then (she was looking for a small dog) but while we were there, Jack was in the far back cage, sleeping. He didnt look like he had a care in the world. I instantly fell in love with him, but did not adopt him right away. We went back to the trailor, and with help from my friend, begged my husband to adopt him. So finally when he agreed we could get another dog, (we already had a german shepherd/golden retriever) the Humane Society was closed for the night.

So that evening, my friend and I went shopping and we were looking at dog bandanas. She said to me that if Jack's name was on a bandana then for sure it was meant to be. So we dug and sure enough we found a bandana with Jack's name on it.

So the next morning came and we got ready and pratically flew to the Humane Society only to find a line up outside the bldg. It was very busy that day and we thought for sure Jack was going to be gone. We ran to where he was to find him there still sleeping. We grabbed his card and took it to the front. He came home with us right then and there.

Today he is happy & healthy and approx 12 years old (he was about 4 when we got him). He is very much loved and spoiled!

I want to thank the Peterborough Humane Society for their help and for taking good care of him until I could come and adopt him! It truly was a great summer!

WINSTON
We met Winston a couple months ago and decided to adopt him. He was impossible to resist with his loving nature and his laid back ways. He has really made our household complete! :)

AL PACINO
I know you all remember me, as I remember you; I spent many months there at the shelter. Im already 11 years old, and Ive had a pretty rough life up until the day you rescued me. But it was really hard trying to find me a home, Im going blind, my hearings not good either, my meow is scratchy and crass, but Im so grateful you never gave up on me!!

Surprisingly, all my little imperfections only make my new owner love me more. Her very first pet when she moved out on her own was a 12 year old, blind and smelly Cocker Spaniel, and while this pet merely fell into her lap, she did everything she could to give him the best last three years of his life. She looks at me, and feels that older, neglected pets are the only pets for her! Though its hard when they go, that has to happen eventually anyway. Its very rewarding to give an older animal a loving home!

I made sure I behaved very well to my new owner. I liked my new place, it was roomy and warm, and she was good to me too! I could hardly believe this was my life now! No dumpsters, no cages! I was in heaven, and I was making sure I wasnt going to leave it!

I do nothing but show my owner how much I appreciate all that shes done for me. She can tell I was treated very well at the shelter, I have no problems being groomed, Ill let her at my nails and teeth if she needs to. Ive never swatted her or scratched. Ive even figured out that she doesnt like it when Im sick on the furniture, so I get up and move to the floor for her now, its the least I can do. I try to be a good cat! When shes sad or not feeling well, I reach out to her, I put my paw on her shoulder, I give her lots of loves.

It seems the longer Im here, the younger I feel. Ive only recently started playing again. I have a toy mouse that I love to chase, and it fills my owners heart with joy to see me go like that!!

My new owner and I are a perfect match for one another, and shell see that my last few years will be my best ever! We both thank you so much for believing in never giving up on any animal that comes your way. We wish you all the best and will keep you updated!

Much love, Al Pacino ...aka Cat and Heidi

SKY
We adopted Sky in September. She has been a wonderful addition to our family. But at first we had our doubts because she could take off all her collars and harnesses and kept getting into trouble for eating my mom's boots and crocs, and also she got lonely while we were at school and work, so she'd take off. Now we have a solution for keeping her at home. She is a siberian husky so she loves the snow! She's a year and a half and is full of energy. Now that she's settled in, she is a great addition to our family!!!!

MICKEY
This weekend we are singing happy birthday to our boy that we adopted from the "break out" in 2007. What a great addition he's been to the family. Mickey (Frisky at the humane society) has grown into the most beautiful cat!!! We congratulate you on such a wonderful idea to unite your furry friends with their "forever home" and wish you continued success.

LUNA
Greetings,

About 4 years we lost our family cat to sickness, both of my children were so upset so we decided to find a new friend. We thought about going to a pet store but thought it would be much better go to the Humane Society and rescue one instead. We made many trips (4 or 5) and each time we visited the Cat Room one female unnamed cat would greet us. All the others would just look and continue napping, but this one grey and orange one was so excited! That made up our minds, she was ours. Her name is Luna now, she is a very happy and loving cat. She also has many companions including people and animals! She has joined our 'zoo' of a Basset Hound, Lhasa, 2 rats, and two fish. She spends most her days laying in a sunny window and enjoying life!

Thank you to the Staff of the Humane Society for all you do, it is an important but not always easy job.

CERBERUS
Cerberus (formerly Stitch)

When my husband and I adopted Cerberus (the C is pronounced as a K as it is a name of Greek descent), it was not something we had really planned. I'd gone to the Peterborough Humane Society with a friend, and we both loved the blue-eyed hound mix. When I got home, I showed my husband his picture on the website not for any reason other than my friend and I had been talking about what a sweet dog he was. Well, the next day my husband was starting to think about adopting him, so we showed our first dog, Chiam, his picture and got quite a laugh when Chiam jumped my computer desk excitedly.

A couple days later, we went back and did an introduction between the two of them, and it went very well. So we filled out the paperwork and Cerby (that's one of his MANY nicknames) came home with us.

It's been almost three months now, and while it's been an adjustment, it's certainly been worth it. Chiam has a brother who absolutely worships the ground he walks on... and Cerby has helped Chiam grow in many ways (see Chiam's entry from 2005, he used to be a very scared and submissive dog, even before we got Cerby he was a completely different dog... now he's even more confident and affectionate than ever!). The two compliment each other perfectly.

Cerby is one of the most affectionate dogs I've ever known. When he cuddles, it's not just a casual head on the lap... it's squirmy and kissy just like a young puppy! And when he wants to snuggle in his sleep, he gets as close as possible - even if it means he takes up a good chunk of the bed!

Many thanks for caring for Cerby during the three months he was at the Peterborough Humane Society.

- Amanda, Christian, Chiam and Cerberus

INIGO MONTOYA
We’ve had our Inigo Montoya (named after my favorite movie character from the Princess Bride!) for over two years now and I just wanted to let all of you wonderful people at the shelter know how well he is doing! My boyfriend Chris and I had stopped by the shelter a handful of times, even walking a few dogs that we really liked, but none of them felt quite “right”.

On a visit one day we noticed a timid and skinny lab/shepherd stray in one of the back cages…when we opened the cage to take him out for a walk, he backed away from us in fear. It broke my heart. When we were out walking, the whole time it seemed like he was sizing us up and he even managed to pull his slim little neck out of his collar and do a few laps around the yard with us and a few volunteers chasing after him!! When it came time to go back inside, I sat down next to him on the grass and said “are you my dog?” to which he responded by rolling over onto his back for a belly scratch….sealed the deal!

It sounds so cheezy but it has been the most amazing experience watching Inigo grow and develop his own little personality. When we first got him, he was timid, hard to walk, always barking at other dogs and pulling all over the place…but within a couple weeks of daily long walks and discipline and loads of love, he chilled right out. We say every day; he really is the best dog ever. He’s playful, goofy and the biggest suck ever, loves cuddling and his squeaky tennis ball, and he LOVES driving out to my parent’s place in Norwood where he has 116 acres to run around on with his best friend, Zippy, my parents’ giant yellow lab.

He has fit into our lives so perfectly and although it baffles me that anyone could let this beautiful dog get away, I like to think it was for the best. Thanks so much for all your hard work and dedication to the animals that need it the most!

- Emily & Chris

CASH
I just noticed the happy ending section of the website and thought I would share our story about Cash aka Willy!

We adopted Cash (Willy) about three weeks ago! At first it was a real struggle as he had some small aggression issues and was not trained properly. Cash had already been brought back to the Humane Society by his first owner and my fiance and I didn't want to give up on him, we knew he deserved the best home and care that only we could provide for him! We hired a personal trainer to come over to our home and work with all of us! I am so happy to say that Cash is doing so we ll and loves his new home and his family. He is still in training and is learning new things everyday! Sometimes you just have to put in that extra effort and time into something you love so much!

Thank you Peterborough Humane Society for taking care of Cash until we came along! He has a great home now and we are all so happy!

- Melissa & Brandon

ROXY
We got our dog Roxy about 3 years ago. She is a German Sheppard/husky. We love her! She is obedient, she is loving, she is cute, smart, and funny! She loves sleeping on our beds, and she loves trying to lay on our laps. Roxy is an amazing addition to our already big family. There are six of us, and she takes up no room at all! Our other dog, Cam did though! Sadly, we had to give him up. He was 4 months old, and big enough to eat things off the counter! We couldn't be happier with a better dog. Roxy loves us, and we all love Roxy back. She doesn't bite, scratch, or bark. She cuddles, sleeps, and plays. I love my dog Roxy. Thank you PHS for our new family member, Roxy.

SUNNY & SHADOW
About 4 1/2 months ago, I decided to just look at the humane society and just see. I knew I was not going home alone that day! I decided I could do more, so I adopted 2 cats!! The friendly volunteer/employee pointed out two cats in different cages that had come in together as kittens and they might remember each other? They had been in separate cages ever since, so we were not sure. I surprised my husband when he came home from work, with our 2 new additions to the family! Adopting these 2 was the best decision! They are best friends, company for each other, and enjoy playing together! They are now inseparable! My vet is also pretty sure they are brothers! I feel good that not only was I able to give 2 cats a good home, but I reunited 2 brothers!! It broke my heart when I got them home and realized they had been in cages so long that they were afraid to be out of them! They were so afraid that they would slide across the floors on their bellies, afraid to walk or stand tall, and desperately searching for their cages! I am so pleased to report that very quickly, by the end of the first day, they loved their new surroundings and all the space! They were very quickly the most loveable pets I could ask for! Somehow, pets from the shelter just seem more loveable, more appreciative, and overall a great option to expand the family. It is amazing to see the transformation of the two cats as they seem happier every day we have them! Everyone just needs someone to love them! Not only are the cats thriving, so am I !! I highly encourage everyone to adopt a new furry friend from the shelter! Even as I type my happy ending right now, I have one cat laying on my lap, and one laying on my feet! They are the most loveable pets I've ever met! The shelter does a great job taking care of all these animals.

- Sunny, Shadow and the Jordans

P.S. - I did not paint their toenails! These are little rubber claw covers that the cats do not even notice at all! This way our new furniture has remained as healthy as our two new pets!

DEXTER
After the passing of our beloved Fritz whom was also adopted from the Peterborough Humane Society we want another faithful canine companion in our lives. We came to the shelter nearly once a week to look at the animals I bagged and pleaded with my parents to let me get various dogs and puppies that we saw there all with the answer of "O, he'll get to big" or "Look at what he has done to that blanket just imagine what he will do to the clothes you leave lying around". I was beginning to give up hope of ever finding animal that was "just right" that’s when my Papa happened to stop by one day after work. There sitting scared and alone was a little Sheppard cross puppy. Papa inquired about him as he had no paper thing in the door. The ladies told him that if he called the next morning that they would be able to give him the information. My papa went in the next day and we were put on the waiting list, the first ones. I was so excited when we got the call that we could come an pick him up. Now Dexter is a year old an has grow to be an amazing dog. He LOVES frisbees and is amazing a catching them in the air. Thank you PHS for my best friend!

SANDY
My family adopted “Sandy” our Sheppard/Husky from you in 2003. Sandy is the name we gave her because she came into the Humane Society as a stray and no id. She was older when we got her - about 7 yrs old.

She is the 5th story for 2003 in your Happy Endings.

Yesterday Saturday May 17/08 was a sad day. Sandy had developed bad symptoms in the past few weeks and it got worse this past week. We took her to our vet on Saturday and our family and Sandy’s vet decided that the only humane thing to do to end her suffering. I was with my baby and held her in my arms for her last breath. She was showered with my tears. My husband and daughter waited outside the room crying just as much as I was.

Sandy is not suffering anymore. Her symptoms will not get worse.

Our neighbours on both sides of our house loved Sandy. Both neighbours got to visit with her as I told them she was not well and it was very serious. She was a very pretty dog and not a barker.

I just wanted to let potential pet owners that as painful as it is to lose a pet it is sure worth the time spent loving them. I know many people want puppies and kittens but older animals need and give just as much if not more love and loyalty back. Please consider adopting an older pet.

I know my Sandy is at the Rainbow Bridge waiting for me.

- Colleen

DOLLAR
Hi there, I was just looking at the happy endings section and thought I would send an update. My fiance and myself adopted our boy 'Dollar' almost 5 years ago. We were looking for an older dog not a puppy, becasue we felt we didnt have the time to train a puppy. However when we arrived, began looking through the kennels, we came across a very hyper 6 month old Am-staff. We played a little went out for a walk, and he stole our hearts. He is now almost 5, and still full of energy, he keeps us on our toes, hogs the bed and has a fetish for stuffed animals. Anyways we just wanted to say thanks. Our lives wouldnt be the same with out him.

- Joanie, Gus, Dollar

MIKEY
I would just like to say thank you to all the Peterborough Humane society staff for all their help in aiding me in getting my handsome cat Mikey. He has and always will my very best friend. As I was going through a terrible break up he was there helping me as I was there for him. Thankyou.

- Tony

BOSKO
My boy friend Kieran and I adopted “Bosko “last august, we went in to the humane society to look at dogs we didn’t think we were going to end up taking one home that day but then we met this big black beautiful dog, we walked him out in the yard and he was happy and when we asked him to sit and lay he did it , he was all around good tempered. My boyfriend and me just got a kitten a couple months before and we needed to make sure “Bosko” was good with cats so they brought out this orange and white kitty and Bosko didn’t react any different when she was around so it was a plus. We took him home, he was such a big suck and he fell in love with our kitten right away, we left him alone only to find out that he had separation anxiety and did damage to the house but we feel in love with him so quickly we could not give him back. We kept him and worked with him to over come his anxiety and he has been doing extremely well, no longer destroying the house! He listens well, knows all his tricks sit, stay, roll over, high five and shake a paw. He thinks he is a lap dog when you sit on the ground he will come sit right on you and try and get as much of his body on your lap as he can. On the hot summer days Bosko enjoys walking to the lake with Kieran and me and go swimming. He is definately a water dog, he also really enjoys going in our boat for rides. He is also well known for sneaking up onto our bed in the middle of the night and trying to snuggle up next to our cat. He is an amazing dog, well behaved and just so darn cute. On behalf of me and my boy friend we would like to thank the humane society for all the hard work they do for the animals with out them we would never of met Bosko who is a big part in our lives. So thank you!

LEROY
Hi everyone ! I'm back on the computer. You aren't going to believe this. Last year I was given my own kitten. Her name is Ruby. She and her sister Monkey had a rough start to life. Unfortunately for the "twins" (Snots and Snotty) their Mommy wasn't taken care of and she developed herpes which was passed on to them. Their Mommy brough them us to the wonderful lady next door and she nursed them to health, one at a time. Mommy Lori had to get up every couple of hours to feed Ruby and behave like a Mommy cat so she would learn how to do things. Once Ruby was better, her Mommy cat (Mouse) brought Monkey over and Mommy Lori nursed her to health. Believe me when I say "Stand back, they're gonna blow!" Those sneezes ain't purdy. Anyhoo, Ruby keeps me on my toes, as well as the toes of Maxie. She loves to run all over us and the house. Makes it difficult to sleep some days. I will admit, I did have a short period of adjustment, but I love my kitty. This is just an example of what I put up with. That's Dad holding Ruby and Ruby holding me.

MAGGIE
First to all we want to say to all of the Peterborough Humane Society staff “thank you so much for all of your hard work”! We know everyone there works extremely hard to care for the animals and that yours can be a very sad and difficult job. We want you to know how much your efforts are appreciated by not only the animals that you save and dedicate so much of your time to but how your work brings joy and happiness to both the animals and the people lucky enough to love them. My husband and I recently adopted our second dog from you approximately 2 months ago we have called her “Maggie 2 shoes” she is an old girl who has stolen our hearts! We know how difficult it must be when finding an older animal in your shelter as their chances of finding a home is very slight. It’s our hope that more people will find it in their hearts to consider an older pet when looking to adopt and that you don’t give up hope that they to can find a loving home. I am attaching a couple of pictures of Maggie and her house mates Chevy and Hunter enjoying wiener time.

FRANK
This story actually goes back to 2004, but as I was browsing through your website for the first time and came across your happy ending section, I just had to share my own story with you! Back in the summer of 2004, I heard this horrific story on the radio about a box being found on the side of the road and inside a mother along with her kittens was found inside. I think that two of the kittens died and the others would be available for a adoption within a few days. I've heard of stories like this before but for some odd reason, I decided to see these kittens for myself.

When I arrived at the Humane Society, the kittens still weren't available for adoption yet, but I was told I could see them and see if I saw any I liked. I went back there to take a look and there in with his brothers and sisters was a beautiful Himalayan kitten with the brightest blue eyes starring back at me. I wasn't sure if he was a part of this litter or if they had just put him in with the other kittens and I really didn't care. I've ALWAYS loved Himilayans and always wanted one for myself and now here was one starring back at me. When he noticed that I was also starring back at him he came up to the cage and starting rubbing up against it, I asked if I could hold him and when I took him out of the cage, I was hooked! I HAD TO HAVE THIS CAT! I worried about how our other cat at home would take to him seeing that cats are territorial, but I remembered reading somewhere that adult cats will take more to a kitten then another adult cat. So, I gave it a try, at first Henry, our cat at home was unsure of this new-comer, but within a few days this little beige and black kitten with the bluest eyes was sleeping up against Henry and now their buddies!

I named him Frank because of his blue eyes...you know...Frank Sinatra...'old blue eyes!' and he will be three in May. Someone told me that Himalayans and Simese cats are known to be a one person cat and are extremely stubborn (which Frank is...extremely, but that's okay!) but also very lovable companions! Frank if anything is my little guard cat, when someone comes into the house that he doesn't know, he'll sit right beside me and stare at that person until he realizes their not there to harm anyone.

Sadly, however, our cat Henry passed away from old age, needless to say I was upset and cried for like three days. For those three days, Frank never left my side, he's never been the type that wants attention all the time let alone one to cuddle, but for those three difficult days that I mourned our cat Henry, Frank actually cuddled up on my lap and followed me everywhere, perhaps he too was mourning Henry just like I was! I love my Frank and I'm so glad that I paid a visit to the Humane Society that day to check out those kittens. I hope all those kittens (including the mom) all found a loving home! I know Frank did!

GILLIE
To the hardworking staff of the Peterborough Humane Society,

I adopted Gillie (formerly Al) from the Peterborough Humane Society in August 2007. He had been waiting to find a home for 9 months when i first saw him. He was hidden in the corner, sitting at the back of his cage staring out at me. His eyes had lost their spark and he seemed to have lost all hope in ever finding a home. His eyes were barely open and he stared off into space, yet as soon as i came up to his cage he popped up and began rubbing against the door, purring. He was asking for the smallest favor, just a place to run and play and sleep. A home to live out the rest of his days and a little loving care. Thats all he wanted, and thats exactly what i wanted to give him. I rushed home and later got my mother to come in and see him, we decided to take him home. He wasn't a particularly pretty cat. Black as night, droopy eyes, and a big head. Not the type of cat most families are seeking for their family pet. Never the less i knew he deserved a home just as much as any other cat, so he came home to our 50 acre farm. At first he found it a little hard to walk, he was stiff from his days in his cage, but the first day home he was already willing to play mouse and chase things. Everyone loves him and he loves everyone. He has never done anything wrong, never acted skittish or even ran from children. He is the happiest cat i have ever seen. He now has an entire barn and 50 acres to roam and run and play. Early in the mornings when I leave for school I sometimes see him standing outside the barn, taking in all the sites and sounds of the world. The birds, the wind, trees and the grass. I can only imagine how thankful he is that he has finally found his forever home.

Thank you Peterborough Humane Society for giving Gillie another chance at life, and allowing him to find a wonderful and loving home!

- Mandy R.

DEXTER
To the wonderful staff of the Peterborough Humane Society;

Just wanted to let you know that Dexter a.k.a (Riley) a 16 month a Vizsla is doing very well in our home. Though it was not an easy journey, he was well worth the work.

We were looking for a companion for our 4 year old Shepherd/ Hound mix (Shady) who we rescued in Nov 07. Dexter had a hold tag on his cage and we thought that he was taken. We went home sad and without a dog. We returned to visit in February to look at another dog we were interested in but he was a stray and needed to be quarantined so we couldn’t take him that day. As we were leaving Dexter reached through the cage and literally grabbed my wife’s coat with his paw and pulled her in as if to say I want you to take me home. My wife asked about his status and we were informed that he was brought back twice for issues. My wife said she had to have him because he picked her and we wanted to try to give him the training he needed.

We are by no means dog professionals; however by using calm assertive energy, rules, boundaries and limitations (thanks Cesar!) Dexter was transformed into an unbelievable dog and companion for Shady. There were moments we thought we had made a mistake and that Dexter really was going to need a home with no other dogs. We had to change our attitude and relax in order to help him relax and coexist with our family. It’s been a week since we brought him home, he is settling in, the two dogs are getting along and finding a groove together.

We have also contacted a professional in the area to ensure we are on the right path with both dogs. I would ask that everyone adopting a pet to not give up on them so quickly. The bond between owner and dog takes constant effort, trust and daily walks. Walking your dog is one the most important thing you can do for him. I would also recommend doing your homework and reading up on dog owning prior to adopting one. It is best for the entire family, animals and people, to make sure you have the time to invest. We were committed to Dexter’s success and we were not going to give up on him.

Thank you to the staff for giving us the chance to make Dexter part of our family! You trusted us and we thank you for it.

Dave and Jacqueline R.

CHARLIE
My girlfriend and I adopted Charlie (previously Vegas) from the Humane Society in early January of 2008. When we met him for the first time he was very shy and almost scared to be around literally anything. We came back the next couple days and he clearly remembered us which showed in his reactions to us. From talking to some of the workers we found out that he was roughly 7 months old and his previous owner could no longer take care of him properly due to not being physically able anymore and thus he had been stuck indoors and unsocialized. He was also a bit nippy and to some seemed untrustworthy.

Being a fairly young and active couple we figured we'd be a great fit for him to get him out of his shell, and being a smaller dog the size of house we currently live in would be perfect. We've come to the conclusion that he is a mix of hound and collie, so he is quite short, but very long. Being on the main floor of a large duplex is easy for him then with little to no stairs in the way.

Since we have brought him home he has been great. It took him a short time to get use to his surroundings, and all of the new people in his life, but after a few meetings with many of our friends he has been great. He does seem to favour girls over guys though which is almost comical when we have couples over. He also gets along great with other dogs, especially big ones for some reason. With his size he usually isn't the one who comes out on top in a short wrestling match, but when they keep going he is the one in the end who keeps going and going and going.

We are so happy to have been able to help Charlie out with a new start and to have dealt with the Humane Society. They were of great help and very happy that he found himself a loving new home. This has truely been a happy ending.

MOLLY
Two years after losing our dog Spunky to illness, we walked into the Humane Society hoping to find a little puppy that would grow into a little dog. For fun, we entered the kennels that house bigger dogs. That's when we met "Molly", a beautiful golden retriever. We took her home and I must say.....life has never been more wonderful. She has a personality like no other dog I have known. She loves to play, loves to please and always makes us laugh...the more we laugh, the more she performs. I didn't think we could handle a big dog but she means the world to us.......so much so that I feel she might benefit from having "a brother" so now I am on the lookout for another dog....preferrably one her size.

HANNA
Hannah is a Collie, German Sheppard Mix we believe.

I adopted her not too long after christmas. I really needed a friend I could talk to, living in a small town made my life lonely. I decided I would adopt a lucky dog who wanted alot of attention, and then there was Hannah! The sweetest dog I have ever came across, I can't believe she was a stray, or who wouldn't adore her. I feel soo lucky to have found such a great companion! She is all I could ever hope for and more, thank you Peterborough SPCA!

SHADOW
On December 27, 2007 we adopted our second dog, who we have named "Shadow" a husky cross, from the Peterborough Humane Society, after having great success with our first adoption - our dog "Trouble", a lab/shepherd cross, who joined our family in 1999. Shadow is approximately 1 year old and Trouble is going to be 9 in March.

Our first dog "Trouble" was in need of companionship, so we acquired another lab/shepherd cross, who we lost at the young age of 4 to cancer. "Trouble" was devastated from losing his brother and best friend, so in consulting our vet, we acquired another dog, who we named "Magnum", a purebred husky, who is now 2 going on 3. They made a fabulous addition to our family and get along very well.

Over the years, as "Trouble", the older dog aged, he lost interest in playing with Magnum, the young and extremely energetic husky - both by age and by breed.

We felt that perhaps bringing another dog into our home, closer in age to "Magnum" would be the solution. In consultation with our vet again, it was agreed that it would be a good idea.

We have a huge backyard and a large cottage property up North and decided that we could amply provide the space to run and play that would be needed.

When we met "Shadow", we knew he would be the addition to the family that we wanted. In speaking with the staff at the Society, we were distraught to hear about his past and the concerns previous owners apparently have had with him.

When we brought him home, he fit right into the family and we did not experience any of the issues that were reported about him to the Society. He is a puppy who has a lot of energy and when his puppy needs are addressed properly, he is a loving and affectionate dog towards humans and other animals.

We are extremely glad that we have our "Three Amigos", who have made our family larger and move loving. We could not be happier.

We have attached a photo of the three boys together. Shadow (the baby) is on the left, Trouble (the oldest) is in the middle and Magnum (the middle child) is on the right. All happy boys sitting and well mannered waiting for a biscuit.

Thanks to everyone at the Peterborough Humane Society for allowing us the chance to adopt Shadow and to make him a welcomed addition to our family. He is a loving dog and we look forward to many happy years with him.

MYLES
My name is Elyse and I adopted a beautiful cat from the Peterborough Humane Society back in September. When I adopted my cat, I was told it was a female so for the first month I called my kitty Maya. However, after a trip to the vets, I realized Maya was actually a male! So now we have our beautiful boy Myles. I never imagined I would love a kitty this much. Thank you for allowing me to adopt Myles since now I have someone waiting for me when I get home from school.

CLEO
I'm writing this on behalf of my parents who adopted Cleo, though at the time her name was Sabrina, from your shelter in May of 2006. Cleo is (we think) a black lab/border collie cross who had a pretty sad story - she had spent most of her life outside tied to a tree. When my parents adopted her, she didn't even know how to climb up stairs, nor was she house trained. The first time I saw her, she looked sick, her fur was thin and quite unhealthy, and she seemed like she was afraid to do anything wrong. Despite her background, she is the most incredible dog with a sweet nature and can be both playful and quiet when appropriate. She rarely gives them any trouble (maybe the occasional piddle on the carpet) and has the adorable awkwardness of a puppy - she has no idea how long her legs are and is constantly tripping up, especially when going up stairs too fast. Despite that, she is the most beautiful and graceful creature when she runs. She's now super healthy and her fur is thick and nice to touch. Her personality has developed quite a bit to the point where she can be quite the little rascal and she still needs to learn some manners not to take food right out of someone's hands! I truly believe my parents were blessed to have found Cleo (and I am too as I get to take care of her when they go away) but I also believe that both Cleo and I are blessed to have my parents in our lives. They are wonderful people who give of themselves constantly and I can't imagine a better couple to take a poor abused animal into their home and turn her into the amazingly beautiful dog that Cleo has become. Cleo has always been a great dog, but a wonderful spirit has emerged from her that could only be brought out by the comfort and care of a loving home. Thank you for making it possible for us to have this incredible presence in our lives!
